British Cassis
Jo Hilditch
Jo Hilditch took over Whittern Farms near Kington 10 years ago and has expanded the business in many different ways. One of these diversifications is producing a delicious Cassis from some of her excess blackcurrants that don’t find their way into Ribena. This alcoholic drink is really blackcurranty and not so sweet as the French more cloying version.
Blackcurrants are Britain’s best superfruit – they contain higher levels of anti-oxidants and vitamins C than any other fruit as well as a range of other important vitamins and elements. (see www.blackcurranfoundation.co.uk). This Cassis is made with her own fruit, in her own backyard, using a classic secret recipe.
Alongside a Countryside Stewardship Scheme, Jo also runs a Wildlife Trust scheme which has included 50 owl and bird boxes around the farm. This commitment to countryside habitat and preservation is part of Jo’s broader environmental ethos.
