Bus services

For a rural county, Herefordshire has a good public transport network.

The urban area of Hereford has regular services linking residential areas to the city centre throughout the day, less frequently in off-peak times. More limited town services are available in Leominster, Ross, Bromyard and Kington. In the deep rural areas a number of community transport schemes ensure that a basic level of mobility is provided.

Over 70% of the county’s bus services are operated by modern, low-floor vehicles. These are accessible by wheelchairs and pushchairs, and people with other mobility problems.

Area Timetable Guides are available from libraries, Tourist Information Centres and many local shops. Bus times are also available on the internet at www.herefordbus.info or art www.traveline.org.uk and the national Travel Line telephone service can supply details of bus services throughout the UK on 0871 200 2233 (0700 – 2230 daily), while local enquiries can be made on 01432 260211 during office hours. Enquiries can also be made by text message using mobile phones. Every bus stop in the county has a unique stop code, which is displayed on the stop sign or available from www.herefordbus.info The service can provide the times of the next four buses due at each stop.

Rail services

There are four rail stations in Herefordshire – Hereford, Leominster, Ledbury and Colwall, with connections to Worcester, Birmingham, Carmarthen (via Cardiff), Manchester, West and North Wales, Oxford, London (Paddington), Newport, Portsmouth and the west of England.
Information on all rail services can be obtained on 08457 484950

Cycling and Walking

The development of walking, cycling and public transport is an integral part of Herefordshire Council’s Local Transport Plan – a five year strategy for a sustainable, integrated transport system, including School Travel Plans and Safer Routes to School, which include ‘walking buses.

The County is developing its network of cycle routes, working with Sustrans to develop the National Cycle Network in the County.

Promoting sustainable transport

Herefordshire Council is encouraging major employers, schools and other organisations to develop their own Travel Plans, and providing free adult cycle training for those who have not ridden a bike for some time. For further information Tel 01432 383656.

Car sharing

The county has its own on-line car sharing network. Twoshare, also part of a national network enables potential car sharers to get in touch with each other. See www.twoshare.co.uk or call 08700 11 11 99 for more details. We can minimise journeys by combining trips, using a combination of car and public transport and car sharing where possible.
